Heraklion – Day 4 – May 7th

I’d had real issues uploading content for my blog, which had got so bad that I couldn’t upload any photos at all to Immich, after 11pm yesterday, and when I ran a speed test against the wi-fi I was getting 0.2Mbs upload and download speed, and that was when the speed test would work. Being a gentleman of a certain age I was awake at 04:00 and I retried the speed test then and I got 10Mbs down and 2 Mbs up, not brilliant but usable. So after breakfast I had an appointment booked with the concierge, firstly to see if my Diamond credit had been applied as On Board Credit (OBC) to my account and also to have a moan about the internet. As we were ashore that meant I had access to 5G and fast uploads for my content.

Breakfast was the usual fare of Bircher Muesli for me followed by a mushroom, cheese and green chilli omelette with a side of Cumberland sausage, while Jane had Egg Florentine (only one) with a side of crispy bacon.

We had nothing on for the morning, as we had a walking tour booked at 12:15 so it was a time to relax and chill on the balcony where we had the morning sun, Jane did a bit of ironing which is possibly a first as she always tries to get out of it by pointing out the ironing board is fixed the wrong way around for a leftie. Sun screen applied, hat and sunglasses packed along with a  flask of water we headed down to get the coach which would whisk us into Heraklion via the Venetian Dockyard and around the Venetian city walls to Liberation square where the walking tour would begin properly.. I would like to tell you all about the tour but Ilektra our guide bombarded me with so many facts my head is still spinning, that said it was an interesting insight into the various stages for Heraklion’s historical make up Ancient Minoans, Arab pirates, the Venitians and finally the Ottoman Turks. After the walking tour we had an hour free so it was the ideal time to grab some lunch. Typically I am unable to make a choice when it comes to choosing a restaurant, but Jane took charge and she saw one she liked the look of their chips.  That was good enough for me. We each had Souvlaki, I had chicken and salad and Jane had lamb and chips, all washed down with a nice beer.

After lunch was finished the waiter brought over some complimentary chocolate cake with ice cream and a small flask of Raki and two shot glasses. It was all very delicious and the Raki brought a nice afterglow to the meal.

We met back at the Lion Fountain for the coach trip back to the ship where we went upstairs to sleep off lunch on the Grills deck before getting changed  for dinner. We had ordered Tempura Prawns from Vitali as a starter and they arrived all plump and crispy ready to be dipped in the accompanying sweet chilli sauce. My main was Chicken Kiyv, nice and Jane was very impressed with the sea trout she had ordered. Jane ended with coffee souffle and I with a  rhubarb pavlova.
